File Send

Send large files with a share link. Retention period, download key, and revocation.

Last updated: 2026-11-02

This feature lets you hand files to someone via a share link when they’re too big to attach to email or chat — videos, design files, batches of photos, and so on. The recipient can receive them just by opening the link, even without an Addness account.

  • Uploading a file issues a share link
  • Choose a retention period of 1, 3, or 7 days. Once it expires, the link can no longer be opened
  • Add an optional download key so that only people who know the key can download
  • You can disable the link even after sending it

On desktop, press “More” in the sidebar to open “Other features,” then press “File Send” under “Store your data.” On mobile, open the menu (≡) at the top left and choose “File Send” under “More.” Either way, the File Send upload screen opens in a new browser tab. On desktop, if you pin File Send in “Other features,” you can open it from the sidebar. In a newly created organization, this feature may be locked. You can use it once you finish the challenge “Learn how File Send works” or press “Skip and use it (no points)” (→ Challenges and feature locks).

  1. Drop a file into the “Drop a file, or click” area
  2. Choose a retention period of “1 day / 3 days / 7 days”
  3. If needed, enter an optional download key (8–72 characters; if left empty, the file can be downloaded with just the URL)
  4. Press “Upload”
  5. When it’s done, “Copy link” and send it to the recipient. If you set a key, share the key with them separately

Note: If you reload the page or close the tab during upload, you’ll have to start over.

The upload screen lists your own transfers, split into “Public,” “Incomplete transfers,” and “Disabled transfers.”

  • Public: Available for the recipient. Use “Disable this link” on each row to cut off access at any time
  • Incomplete transfers: Uploads that stopped partway. They keep using your capacity, so discard them to free up space if you don’t need them (they can’t be resumed)
  • Disabled transfers: Already disabled. The recipient can’t retrieve anything even if they open the link

AI connected via MCP (Claude Code, Codex, etc.) can also use File Send. The AI creates the transfer, uploads it, and returns the share link and expiry. It can also set the retention period (1, 3, or 7 days) and a download key, check send history, and disable links. A single transfer can include up to 100 files. Each file the AI sends can be up to about 5 GB (4.995 GiB). Send larger files from the browser.

Organization admins can review the whole organization’s send history through AI.

→ MCP integration guide

  • You can send up to 50 GB per person, the same on every paid plan. Space frees up as links expire (→ Plans and billing)
  • A single transfer can include up to 100 files
  • Each file the AI sends can be up to about 5 GB (4.995 GiB). Send larger files from the browser
  • “File Send” in “Other features” and in the mobile menu appears for every organization. Only people who belong to an organization on a paid plan can upload (guests can’t upload). Without permission, you’ll be turned away at the upload screen
  • While an organization admin has turned off “Members can create public links” under Organization settings › Outbound access, no new transfers can be sent, including ones the AI creates. Transfers already sent are not closed when this switch is turned off (→ Organization settings)
