Chat Page

Goal chats, DMs, groups, and meetings with auto minutes.

Last updated: 2026-11-02

The chat page is where the organization’s conversations gather. The list on the left shows goal chats, DMs, and groups, split into the Pinned / Channels / Goals / Direct messages sections. Unread badges, mentions of you, and pins make “the conversations to look at” immediately clear. Network conversations that span organizations are opened not on the chat page but from Network’s “Message” (→ Addness Network).

A post to a goal’s chat is the same thing as that goal’s comment. A message you send in a goal’s chat is also visible as a comment on the goal detail page.

In a newly created organization, Chat may have a lock. You can use it once you finish the challenge “Get to know Chat” or press “Skip and use it (no points).” A goal’s “Comments” have the same lock as Chat, so they become usable at the same time (→ Challenges and feature locks).

A post = a comment on the goal. The conversation accumulates as context as it is

Group

A conversation per project

# New business team
# Marketing

The same feel as the groups in the chat tools you've used until now. For general contact and sharing

DM

One-on-one exchanges

For urgent checks and individual consultations

All three line up in a single list on the left. The more you steer work talk into the goal's chat, the more context accumulates in the organization

  • Left: list. At the right end of the top “Chat” heading are Addness reply handling and ”+” (New chat), with a search bar below them, and below that the list of conversations. The list isn’t switched by tabs; the sections “Pinned,” “Channels,” “Goals,” and “Direct messages” continue as one column. “Channels” holds groups (public and private), “Goals” holds goal chats, and “Direct messages” holds DMs. If you pin frequently used conversations, they gather in the “Pinned” section and stay at the very top (this section doesn’t appear when nothing is pinned). Conversations with notifications turned off show “Notifications muted” or “Mentions only”.
    • “Channels” is sorted by name; “Goals” and “Direct messages” are sorted by most recent activity
    • Pressing a section heading collapses or expands that section. From ”…” (Section options) at the right of the heading, choosing “Move up” or “Move down” reorders the sections (“Pinned” is always first). The collapsed state and the order are saved for each member, and they are the same on PC and on a phone
    • From “Completed goals” at the end of the “Goals” section, you can open the conversations of completed goals. Completed goals with unread messages are listed as rows in the “Goals” section
    • From “Find public groups” at the end of the “Channels” section, you can find public groups you haven’t joined yet
  • Center: conversation. The messages of the selected conversation
  • Right: replies and members. The reply pane opened from a message’s “Reply.” You can reply in a thread not just on goal chats but also on DM and group messages. Press “Check members” in the conversation header and the list of participants opens in the same place (“Members” for groups, “Assignees” for goals)

The search bar (“Search chats”) covers the organization’s goals, messages, DMs, and groups.

Press the search bar and “Recent searches” and “Recently opened chats” appear right there. Enter words and the search results are split into five — people / rooms / goals / messages within a goal / DM and group messages — and pressing one jumps straight to that conversation or thread. Pressing “People” opens a DM with that person. Public groups you haven’t joined yet are also found, marked “Not joined.”

If the words you enter match a person’s name, a “Conversations involving X” section also appears below “People.” It lists the messages that person wrote, the messages addressed to that person, and the goals assigned to that person, and the “Wrote,” “Mentioned,” and “Assigned” labels on the right of each row show how the person is involved. Up to 6 rows are shown, and “Show more (N)” opens the rest.

In the results for DM and group messages, posts with the same opening by the same person in the same room are gathered into one. Press Open on the line below, “N more posts with the same opening by the same person in the same room,” to list the rest, “Read more” to load further posts, and Close to fold them again.

Choose a goal, and that goal’s thread list flows chronologically.

  • A post becomes a thread, and you reply on the right. Close a settled thread with “Mark as resolved,” and filter with the Unresolved / Resolved / All tabs
  • A goal’s activity (completion, due-date change, status change, etc.) is also mixed into the conversation, so you can follow “what happened on this goal” in one place (hide it with “Hide activity” at the right end)
  • The header shows the “Goal” mark and the goal name. Press the goal name to open the goal detail page. From the “View members” (with a count), Meeting, and ”…” (Open goal details) on the right, you can move to that goal’s operations
  • Press “View members” and the “Assignees” list opens on the right, divided into owner, editors, and viewers. If you have permission to add assignees, you can add them with the + above the list

When a reply is added to a past thread, ”◯ replies” appears below the parent message. When there are unread replies, ”◯ unread” is added next to it. Pressing it opens that thread’s reply pane on the right, where you can read the replies, add reactions, and write a reply.

  • A single “New” divider line is placed at the start of the unread as of when you opened the conversation. In goal chats it goes right before a new thread you haven’t opened yet, and in the reply pane it goes right before the first unread reply. Its position doesn’t move as you read on
  • When threads you haven’t read have new replies above the part shown on screen, ”◯ earlier threads have new replies” appears at the top of the goal chat. Press “Show” to move to the topmost of those threads
  • In the reply pane, when unread replies remain older than the loaded range, ”◯ earlier replies are unread” appears at the top. Press “Show” to go back to the oldest unread reply
  • If new messages arrive while you’re scrolled up, a ”◯ new” button (or “To latest” if none arrived) floats at the bottom. Press it to return to the bottom
  • While someone is writing, ”◯◯ is typing…” appears near the input box. In a thread’s reply pane, ”◯◯ is typing a reply…” appears

Replies in a thread are marked read when you open the reply pane and view down to the bottom. Just opening the reply pane does not mark them read.

After the AI works in bulk, for instance, dozens of activities run in a row. Consecutive ones are folded into a single ”◯ activities” row, with the breakdown (◯ completed, ◯ created, ◯ due-date changes…) shown alongside. Press to open the contents.

Mark as resolved

This exchange stays on the goal as-is, as a comment on "Win the proposal for Acme Corp"

Handle small requests in the goal's chat. Once it's done, "Mark as resolved"—the conversation becomes the goal's context as it is

From ”+” (New chat) at the top of the list, choose “Create group,” “Start DM,” or “Find public groups.” A Network group for talking across organizations is created not here but from Network’s “Message” (→ Addness Network).

  • Group — Three steps: name and icon → visibility → members. Visibility is Public (anyone in the organization can join and view; default) or Private (only invited members)
  • DM — Just choose the other person. There’s always one DM with the same person
  • Find public groups — Join from the list of public groups in the organization with “Join.” You can read the contents even before joining
  • Press “Check members” in the header and the “Members” list opens on the right, divided into managers and members
  • The group’s managers and the organization’s admins can add members with the + above the list. Change a role or remove someone from the ”…” on the profile that opens when you press a member
  • From “Invite by link” below the list, you can also create an invite link. Only members of the same organization can join through the invite link, and you can stop it with “Deactivate link”
  • Change a group’s name and icon by pressing the group name in the header and going to Group settings
  • The header’s ”…” holds notifications (Get notifications / Mentions only / Mute notifications), Group settings, Leave group, and Delete group (enter the group name to confirm)
  • The all-hands chat is a private group named after the organization, created automatically when the organization is created. In the list and the header, an “All” badge appears to the right of its name, and its icon in the header is the organization’s logo. Members who join the organization by invitation are added automatically. Guests are not added automatically. Ordinary members cannot leave, remove members, delete it, change its visibility, or use an invite link in the all-hands chat; if they try, “This action isn’t available in the all-hands chat” appears
  • When you edit a message you wrote, you can also pick people with @ to add mentions. Only the people you add are notified
  • When you delete a message, a confirmation titled “Delete this message?” appears. Press “Delete” to remove it. This can’t be undone. If the message has attachments, they are deleted too
  • You can attach files to chat messages and comments. Executables, scripts, installers, macro-enabled Office files, and similar files can’t be attached for security reasons
  • While a conversation is open on your screen, new messages in that conversation do not trigger a push notification. This applies only in Chrome-based browsers (including Edge) and Firefox, and only while that tab is in front. In Safari (including the iPhone home-screen app and other browsers on iOS), the push notification still appears even for the open conversation.
  • DMs and groups also get a “New” divider at the top of the unread as of when you opened them
  • In DMs and groups, choose “Pin” from a message’s ”…” menu or right-click to pin that message for everyone in the room. A pinned message shows “Pinned by X”. A “View pinned messages (N)” button appears in the header. Press it to open the pins, newest first, and press a row to jump to the message. To remove a pin, choose “Unpin”. A room can have up to 100 pins. In groups, only active members can pin.
  • In goal chats, DMs and groups, the date dividers show today and yesterday as “Today” and “Yesterday”. Press a date divider to open “Jump to…”, then choose “Most recent”, “Last week”, “Last month”, “The very beginning” or “Jump to a specific date”.
  • When an unread mention of you is left in an old thread, “N unread thread mentions for you” appears at the top of the DM or group. Press “Show” to open the threads, starting from the oldest.
  • Addness reply handling. Choose “Handle chats awaiting my reply with AI” from Addness reply handling above the list to ask the AI, all at once, to handle messages you haven’t replied or responded to yet and to follow up on those that haven’t received a reply
  • “Addness this message”. Choose “Addness this message” from a message’s ”…” button or the right-click menu to hand the AI you normally use an instruction for responding to that message. On a PC, you can also choose it from the ✦ button that appears on the message. On a phone, choose it from the ”…” button or the menu that opens when you press and hold, and it opens in a sheet from the bottom of the screen. It works on DMs, groups, thread replies, and messages you sent yourself, and the same applies in the Office mini window of the virtual space and in chats that show a reply box in notification details.

The first time you open a DM or a group, a consent confirmation about the privacy of communications appears once. If you consent in either DMs or groups, you are treated as having consented in the other as well. Until you consent, messages are not shown and you cannot send any. When an AI creates, reads, or sends in a DM or group, you need to have agreed on the screen first (→ FAQ).

You can start a meeting on the spot. There are three places to start.

  1. The headphone icon in a goal’s chat — a meeting tied to that goal
  2. The phone icon in a DM or the headphone icon in a group — a meeting with the members of that conversation
  3. “Recording, audio, meetings & notes” → “Meeting” at the top of the screen — a standalone meeting without choosing a goal (you can’t start one from a phone’s browser; start it from the Addness app or a browser on a computer)

During a call, you can use screen sharing (including audio), camera, background blur, and “Invite members” (call other members into the call).

Pressing “Start creating notes” records the call, auto-generates minutes and a transcript, and saves them as a resource. In-person meetings and Google Meet, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams meetings can be turned into minutes too. For detailed use by entry point, see Meetings and minutes.
